In recent years a number of hotels in London have been keen to show their green credentials. Two notable examples are 51 Buckingham Gate and Andaz Liverpool Street. Their approaches have been very different, in the case of the former the stress has been primarily on what staff can do to reduce energy consumption, while in the case of the latter the architects turned to cutting-edge eco technology in an attempt to create an eco-conscious brand.
51 Buckingham Gate in Victoria, which is part of the Taj group, encourages a very hands-on approach for its staff with the aim of reducing water and energy consumption. Since 2003 they have had a Green Team whose goal is to drive all of 51’s green and environmentally friendly initiatives. Eleven people meet once a month to discuss initiatives and their job is to encourage all 250 associates to do their bit. Each member of staff is given training on the hotel’s environment policy at their induction and this is reinforced in further training sessions. Furthermore staff are encouraged to leave suggestions in a “green ideas folder” on the internal computer network. Green days are held in the courtyard to encourage staff to grow food, travel to work by bike or on foot, and demonstrate such things as organic cleaning and how to save energy in your home.
